My original plan was to head South for three days, splitting them between Gyeongju and Busan, with one night in each. Gyeongju is a smaller city, filled with World Heritage sites as the former capital of the Silla Dynasty, about two hours south of Seoul by train. The free night was supposed to be deposited in my account sometime in September, so I was checking daily, hoping there would be still be award availability.
Had I planned in advance, I could have flown directly from Busan to Taipei and done 2 nights in Gyeongju and 1 in Busan. The Korail pass is only for foreigners living abroad, and you buy it online, print a voucher, and then exchange the voucher for an actual pass. Then you book tickets using the pass in person. I went on the ticket line, only to be told I needed to go to the Information Desk first to exchange my printout for the pass.
Otherwise, there are only two other small gift-type stores, some convenience stores. I meandered a bit, sat for a bit, and then sat some more with a latte. I was ready to pick up an uninspiring small salad from Paris Croissant for lunch but saw some more food options on the way to the tracks from the station.
There I found the equivalent of food trucks, about 12 different stalls selling various Korean, Thai, Chinese, and Japanese dishes. The bathroom was disgusting. The train does go very fast, though, particularly once you get out of Seoul β covering about miles in two hours. It also βpasses through some of the less pretty cities of inland Korea, including Daegu β a big U. The most notable part of the train ride were the two loud American guys who were sitting a few rows behind me.
They had strong Southern accents and had dirty mouths deployed at high decibels. Later, they began to recount their Saturday night in Seoul in detail β which included lots of drinks and prostitutes, who they complained had ripped them off. Turns out they were in the U. Navy and based in Daegu. Well, made for an interesting train ride.
