So should we spend the whole time in the South or fly into Aukland travel the around North. Then go South We are home swappers, so are aiming to stay put for 1 week here or there been offered a house in Hochstetter? Our youngest also wants to spend a week in a camper van Where is the best place to do that? The rest of the time we hope to hire a car.
Walk through nature a couple of hours at a time. Zip line. Body surf. Maybe kayak we are not experienced We are open to all. We don't want to be driving every day. We aim to stay put for 3 days minimum at a time and explore. What are the best, slightly out of the way spots to stay in, that we can spring board from?
Any suggestions welcome. Ferdinand von Hochstetter was an early explorer in NZ. He traveled with Julius Haast. There is a glacier, a hill, and a frog named after him. There is also a lake, but no town I am aware of. Is your home swap at Lake Hochstetter? If so it's fairly remote; inland from Greymouth. There does appear to be a road to it, but it's pretty much out in the sticks. You don't say what time of year you are coming, but it's rather cold in a motor home in the winter, and in summer they are quite expensive.
A car and motels is usually the cheapest and most convenient. Think we will fly into Aukland, have a look around the North of the North then travel down just as far at Rotorua.
Then make a bee line for the South Island? Leave the rental car in the north and catch a ferry across then get another car? The ferry from Wellington to Picton is very scenic once you get into the sounds.
